Good evening everyone,
Please find tonight's homework included below. Students are reminded that it is extremely important that they manage their time during the week and do not wait until the night before to complete assignments that they have been given multiple nights to complete. Not only does this enhance the quality of work, but it also provides students with an opportunity to ask questions in advance from myself if there is something that they need help on.

Good evening everyone,
If you have not already, please take the opportunity to see the letter that was sent home this evening from Mr. Gardner regarding our Nut Free School Policy. Its purpose is to serve as a very friendly reminder of how the policy makes our school a more safe place for students.
I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage parents to feel free to ask their child what we are learning in class. This serves to help parents feel a greater connection to the classroom as well as enabling them to provide increased support on homework and assignments. It also benefits students in that it provides them with the opportunity to discuss what they have learned. This enhances the learning process and also allows students to identify areas where they may need extra support - another very important step in the learning process.
Please find tonight's homework below.

Letter From Mr. Gardner
Hello all,
Please find below a letter from Mr. Gardner, regarding our school's Peanut and Nut Sensitive Policy. This letter also came home, but we thought it would be appropriate to place on our blog as well.
Thank you kindly.
February 25, 2013
Dear Parents,
I wanted to take this opportunity to remind
families, that at Rick Hansen PS, we have a Peanut and Nut Sensitive
Policy. At our school, there are
children who have life-threatening allergies to specific foods. In order to
ensure the health and well-being of these students, we have a Peanut and Nut
Sensitive Policy, which reminds families that nuts and nut products should not
be brought to the school. We need the
understanding and commitment of everyone in our community to ensure the safety
of all of our students. Please take the time to read ingredient labels
carefully when packing snacks and lunches.
This will help to ensure that our students remain free from exposure to
nut products and help avoid the possibility of a medical emergency.
There are many times throughout the school year
when celebrations take place – Halloween, Valentine’s Day to name but two. If you do want to send an item in with your
child to celebrate this day, we ask that in lieu of candy treats, that you
please send in a non-food item. This may
include stickers, pencils, cards, erasers and the like.
As a designated Healthy Living School, we continue
to promote the consumption of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. It has been wonderful to see so many families
bringing in fruit trays for class snacks or other celebrations.
Sincerely,
Mr. S. Gardner
Principal

Wednesday February 20th, 2013 - Mr. Macris Presentation Today
Good evening everyone,
Today the grade 5's were able to witness a tremendous presentation from Mr. Alex Macris, who is a technology consultant in our board. Mr. Macris was good enough to take the time to come in and show our students all the wonderful resources that are available to them when it comes to internet research. He provided each student with a guide to follow when they do their research which allows them access to these great resources. It is on the moodle and students can access it by logging in at www.moodle2.yrdsb.ca. If they have not yet signed in and accessed these moodle resource they are to follow these instructions:
1. www.moodle2.yrdsb.ca
2. Log In
3. Go to bottom and click on CRT Courses
4. Type EOS in the search engine
5. Click on "Effective Online Searches"
6. At this point they can go to the homepage and it should be under their homepage under "My Courses"
As well, students were informed yesterday from their supply teacher that the math division quiz has been moved to tomorrow. We did a review today in class and students have questions to study from. I have also moved the due date for the Trustworthy Article to Friday since I was away yesterday and as such was not available to provide support to students who needed it.

Good evening everyone,
As I am sure you are by now aware, the Term 1 Report Cards went home yesterday. It is requested that you go over the report card with your student and take the chance to fill out the tear off portion and return it to the school by next Wednesday. This serves as a great opportunity to discuss with your child what their strengths are, as well as what steps they should take to improve upon their academic achievements in Term 2.
Next Thursday (February 21st) students will be required to hand in their Trustworthy Article Assignment. I have received almost all of the rough drafts by now, and provided feedback for students. They now need to type up the assignment at home and organize it in article form. Students are strongly encouraged not to wait until the last minute to complete this assignment. They will need more than the night before to complete it.
Here is tonight's work.
Grade 5:
-Social Studies - research
- Music: Finish research
-Literacy - Read 30 minutes and do "Determining Importance" page (fill out the page over the course of the week). Trustworthy Article due Thursday February 21st

Directions for Posting on the Making a Difference Blog
Dear Parents,
The students have created a blog to promote making a difference in our school. They will be asked from time to time to make posts on it for their peers to see (both in the class, as well as the school as a whole). We would also like to encourage families to take the time to go on the blog and post encouraging words whenever they have the chance. This is a place for our whole Rick Hansen community to celebrate the process of making positive impacts in our world.
Below are the steps for signing in....
1. www.blogger.com
2. User name: mrcarrclass1
Password: rickhansen
3. Once signed in students can click on the button which looks like a pencil. This is where they can add their title and make their post.
4. To access the blog website students can either click on the "View blog" button or go directly to the website:
www.makingadifferencerhps.blogspot.ca
Thank you for celebrating this initiative with us!
