Monday September 30, 2013

Good evening everyone,

Please make sure that you let your parents know that you got your math tests back today.  You can tell them the mark that you got and tell them about the fact that they will be able to see the test when your "Friday Folder" comes home for the first time.

Your homework for this evening is below:

Literacy - Read 30 minutes, complete your Reader's Notebook (due tomorrow)

Math - Retest is on Friday.  It is open to anyone who would like to improve their mark.

Social Studies - Complete chart and questions (due Wednesday).  You will need to use Britanica.  Remember to go to www.moodle2.yrdsb.ca

There will be math help tomorrow at lunch recess and Wednesday at morning recess for those who are taking Friday's retest.

Have a great night!

Mr. Carr

Friday September 27, 2013

Good evening everyone,

We had a great day today!  I am very proud of the effort that everyone displayed today as we worked toward doing our personal best by displaying enthusiasm and hard work in the activities we worked on.

Please remember that your homework for this weekend is to read for 30 minutes and then complete pages in your Reader's Notebook.  There is no limit to the amount that you complete in your Reader's Notebook, but I would like everyone to spend at least 15 minutes completing as much good work as they can.

Have a great weekend!  I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Mr. Carr

*Note to parents.....

I am starting to write the blog in a way which is addressed to the students for I believe it serves as a way to develop a greater sense of responsibility for their own learning.  I would however appreciate parents taking the time to look over the homework as well.  The extra support that you provide is of  tremendous value to both your child, as well as myself.  Thanks so much!

Thursday 12 September 2013

Thursday September 12, 2013

Good evening,

As of late we have been working on Descriptive Text Articles and how to answer questions using the "Answer, Prove, Explain" (APE) format.  In the next couple of weeks, students will be learning more about these types of articles, and their first writing assignment will be to create their own.  The APE format can be used to answer any type of question which relates to a text, movie, song, etc..

It is extremely beneficial for students to discuss what they have been learning at home, and even practice using it wherever possible in contexts outside of the classroom.  This will allow them to become more comfortable using their knowledge, as well as identify areas where they may need extra instruction or need to ask questions.

Please find tonight's homework below.

Good evening everyone,

Please find the homework below, along with last night's message.  I will be including this message for the next few posts to ensure that all families have a chance to see it.  Thanks so much :)

Good evening,

As many are now aware, a letter was sent home with students tonight to serve as an official introduction of myself, as well as to make everyone aware of this blog which will serve as a means to keep the lines of communication open between school and home.  It is my hope that all students and parents will check this blog nightly so as to ensure that their child(ren) are prepared for class each day.  As well, this blog will serve as an alternative to agendas this year.  Students are still welcome to keep an agenda if they feel that it would be of benefit to them, but this blog will be the most accurate method of keeping track of homework.

Something I did not include on the "Getting to Know You" form was my email address.  My door is always open, and I understand that often the easiest method of communication is through email.  My email address is jonathan.carr@yrdsb.edu.on.ca.  For those who feel comfortable, please feel free to include your email address on the form mentioned above so that I too can seek to keep the lines of communication open.

Wednesday's Homework:

Tuesday September 3, 2013

Welcome to another school year at Rick Hansen P.S.!  It was so nice to meet so many parents this morning at the school.  For those I have yet to meet, I look forward to hopefully meeting you all soon.

This blog will be a wonderful tool for keeping parents up to date with that which students have been working on in the classroom.  The homework will be posted each night so that students and parents can ensure that they complete all work and come to school the next day prepared for class.  A note will be coming home shortly which will serve to better introduce myself and afford parents the opportunity to share any information they feel would be helpful in ensuring a great learning experience in our class this year.

Today a large number of forms were sent home, most of which are found in a "Student Start-Up Package".  Please take the time over the next couple of days to go over these forms with your child, and we ask that you please have them in at your earliest convenience.  Thanks so much! :)

Please find tonight's homework below:
