1. (Text 1) x (Text 2) = (Deeper knowledge/insights).
2.  Using the equation above, you should be able to explain how the learning you gaining from multiple texts connect to each other.  These connections are what lead to deep, meaningful insights.
3.  Focus on exploring what you are passionate and curious about.  This might mean that you go off on a tangent learning about something that may seem unrelated to your Passion Project.  But if it sparks your creativity, explore it!  See where it leads you, and just have fun learning!  Curiosity is fuel for learning, and it will lead you to meaningful learning experiences that matter to you.

Wednesday 8 April 2020

Wednesday April 8, 2020

Good morning everyone,

Attention grade 2 students & parents...please scroll down to the bottom of this post to find your information.  Thanks :)

IMPORTANT UPDATE
Since online learning is new to all of us, I anticipate changes having to be made.  The following are changes that will begin today.....

1. Office Hours
The school board has told teachers to be available for 1 hour a day for office hours.  My office hours will now be from 11am - 12pm.  This reduction in office hour time will provide me more time to assess student work.  I will still be trying to answer all of your questions, but 11am - 12pm will be the time where you can expect a more immediate response.

2. Amount of Work
I believe there has been some confusion around how much time should be spent on each assignment, each day, for the various subjects.  You are not required to work on Geography, Health, Phys Ed and Science every day. This confusion is my fault, and I apologize for any frustration I have caused.  The last thing your online learning should be is frustrating or overwhelming.  So again, I apologize if I caused anyone to be frustrated or overwhelmed.  I feel badly if this was the case.  In order to address my error, I will schedule ALL the tasks you will complete each day for each subject.

Below is one possibility of how the week might look.  As you can see, I will try to more clearly structure exactly what subjects to work on each day, and how long to work on them.  The free choice section is meant to serve as a "buffer" to help you catch up if you find you need more time on a particular lesson or task....

Monday
  1. Health (20 min)
  2. Science (30 min)
  3. Geography (30 min)
  4. French (15 min)

Tuesday
  1. Math (30 min)
  2. Literacy (45 min)
  3. French (15 min)
  4. Drama (10 min)
  5. Free choice (20 min) - assignments you need to catch up on. (Science, Geography, Phys Ed, Drama, Health, etc)

Wednesday
  1. Math (30 min)
  2. Literacy (45 min)
  3. French (15 min)
  4. Free choice (30 min) -  assignments you need to catch up on. (Science, Geography, Phys Ed, Drama, Health etc)

Thursday
  1. Math (30 min)
  2. Literacy (45 min)
  3. French (15 min)
  4. Free choice (30 min) -  assignments you need to catch up on. (Science, Geography, Phys Ed, Drama, Health etc)

Grade 2 - Science, Health, Drama
Hello parents & students.  From now on, I will post all assignments on Google Classroom.  I will also post the assignments on this blog page.

The assignments that I provide should only take about 10 minutes.  The reason for this is to ensure that the focus for students is on Literacy & Math instruction, and to ensure that they are not getting overloaded with work.

The Google Classroom code is lrxnl6n .

Here is a video that Mrs. Ford created to help explain how to use Google Classroom.

Please feel free to email me at any time with questions, or if there are any struggles or concerns.  My office hours are 9am - 12pm, Monday thru Friday.  My office hours will be the time that I can be most easily reached, but feel free to contact me any time.

Have a great day,

Jonathan Carr

To those who have started the assignments early....

I love your enthusiasm :)

I am beginning to get assignments ready for Monday.  You are welcome to be working on them, but please make sure that you check the blog on Monday because you do not yet have all of the instructions.  I will not be providing these instructions until Monday.

I just don't want anyone to miss anything :)

Thanks!

Update - Introduction to Online Learning

Hello everyone,

It was great to connect with so many of you on the phone, and I look forward to continuing to connect over the coming weeks as we transition to online learning.

Below is information on what online learning will look like for our class.  I have also provided a link to a video to allow me to address everyone personally and explain in more detail.

Introduction to Online Learning Video

Notes from the Video
1.  Please begin each day by checking the blog.  All assignments, instructions, news, etc. will be posted here.

2.  While assignments and instructions will be posted on the blog, documents and tasks will be placed on Google Classroom as they normally are.  Please make sure that you have access to the following Google Classrooms….
- Literacy
- Math
- Geography
- If you do not have access to any of these, please email me and let me know so that I can get you connected. (jonathan.carr@yrdsb.ca)

3.  Please follow all instructions - do not try to skip steps.  This could lead to great confusion for students.

4.  Submitting assignments - This is another reason why it is important to follow all instructions.  I will ask students to submit work in particular ways so that I can keep track of work being completed, and provide feedback on particular tasks.

5.  Assessment - At this point in time, the school board has not given us any information on assessments (grades/marks).  This information will be coming later.

6.  No busy work - I will not be providing you with “busy work”.  The work assigned will have purpose, and will not be meant to simply keep you busy.  I will seek to keep instruction concise.  Just like in class, the work I provide you will have a purpose, and tasks will often build upon each other to support your understanding of curricular concepts, as well as to develop critical thinking and learning skills.

7.  Mr. Carr's office hours will be from 9am - 12pm (Monday thru Friday).  These are the times that I will be available for questions and support as you complete assigned work.

8.  When you complete your work is up to you.  If you can, it is recommended that you try to maintain a consistent schedule.  This is why I am making myself available from 9am-12pm for questions, teaching and general support.  Other aspects of my school day will be spent creating lessons and providing feedback on work.

9.  For each task there will be a "Questions" document for you to post all of your questions.  You can post your questions in the document, and I will answer them in the document.  You are encouraged to post your questions there because that way everyone can see the questions and answers, and learn from them.

10.  If you have private questions please feel free to send me an email.

11.  The YRDSB has asked that we provide no more than 10 hours/week of school work.  I will seek to structure assignments in a way which would require approximately this amount of time for each subject.  The below time frames are per day....
- Literacy (45 minutes)
- Math (30 minutes)
- Other subjects (Geography, Art, Health) (30 minutes)
- Rotary subjects (French, Science, Music) (15 minutes)

12.  Parents - please let me know if it is taking your child longer than 2 hours/day or 10 hours/week to complete work.

13.  Parents… It is strongly encouraged that you are taking a look at the blog assignments for each day.  I believe accountability will be an important part of supporting them through this transition to online learning.

14.  I believe Mme Murgan and Ms. Glanfield have blogs.  They may or may not post assignments there.  Please check them and complete assigned work.  Please be advised that it may take them time to get assignments prepared and readily available to students.

15.  Anything from this information could change.  If it does, I will let you know as soon as possible.

While it is disappointing to not be with you in the classroom, I take comfort in knowing that you are happy and healthy.  While this will be different, it will still be productive.  Please make sure that you are communicating with me often, especially if you have questions.  While we might be on the other side of a computer screen, I still consider it a privilege to be able to connect with you and support your learning.

See you Monday!  Don't be late...or else I will send you to the office....Oh wait...Never mind, I'll have to send you to your rooms. :)  I'm hoping that joke seems as funny reading it, as it does to me typing it.  LOL!

Talk soon :)
