Thursday March 28, 2013

I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a happy Easter.  I hope that you and your families have a nice long weekend.

I am not assigning any new homework over the weekend.  Students are simply asked to make sure that they are aware of the due dates of upcoming assignments, and that they complete any work that has not been completed and is now late.

If you have any questions on the assignments please check the last couple of days' blog entries.

Thank you, and again happy Easter.

Good evening,

Today we had the opportunity to welcome a new student into our classroom!  Emily, who lives in China, will be with us for the next while and we are extremely excited to have her here.  The students did a great job of welcoming Emily to our school, and I look forward to seeing them continue to do so.  It should also be noted that Emily was so generous as to bring all of the students gifts today.  A very exciting day we had indeed!

Friday March 22, 2013

Good evening,

Today our students had the privilege of hearing Luke Anderson speak.  Your son or daughter can tell you more about this extraordinary gentleman, but he is an individual who suffered a spinal cord injury a little over 10 years ago which left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.  Today he made a great presentation to the students about how, despite his challenges, he still works hard to make a difference in the world.  This has been our challenge to students all year.  We are continuing to strive to find ways that we as a school can make a positive impact on our society and world.

I hope you all have a great weekend.  Please see this weekend's homework included below.

Monday March 18, 2013

Hello everyone!

I hope that all families had a wonderful March Break with their families.  It was nice to see all the students back today rejuvenated and refreshed.

There is one note that I feel is important to make parents aware of.  With the snow, and melting snow, it makes for some wet conditions out at recess.  I just wanted to make sure that I made all parents aware that the students have been told that it is their responsibility to make sure that they come dressed for the weather.  Many students have been coming in after recess and asking to call home for a change of clothes.  We understand that there are some circumstances where a student will get wet due to an accidental fall, trip, etc..; however, many students have been choosing to engage in activities which cause them to get very wet.  The frequent requests to call home not only interrupt the office staff, but class lessons and activities as well.  Students are more than welcome to bring one change of clothes to keep in their lockers, but again, it is the expectation that they will either come dressed appropriately, or decide not to participate in activities that could lead them to get wet and uncomfortable.

Here is tonight's homework...

Grade 5

Friday March 8, 2013

Good evening,

For the break I am not assigning any new homework.  Students are asked to complete any late assignments, but are also welcome to work on improving assignments which we are currently working on, but are not yet due.  For instance, grade 5's can continue working on adding to their research for their Ancient Civilization Assignment, and both grades can continue to add to their research for their speech topic.  One thing that I do ask is that all students take time to study their multiplication tables (1-11).  It is the expectation that all students have these memorized by now, for it is imperative for them to be memorized for future success in math this year.

Thank you and I hope all families have a happy and safe March Break!

Good evening,

Tomorrow is our second "Walking Wednesday".  Students are encouraged to walk at least one block to school tomorrow.  On their way they can be looking for "Freddy the Foot".  This is just a fun initiative to promote healthy living within our school community.

I know I included this yesterday, but I feel it may be helpful to repeat.....

In regards to the research for student speeches, they were assigned to have their research done for today along with their arguments.  We had a chance to discuss our arguments today in class and students have now been assigned to go back and evaluate the research that they have, along with the arguments that they have developed.  In the next couple of days we will be finalizing the arguments and creating the structure for our speeches.  Discussing with your child the possible arguments that they could use for their topic is certainly welcomed.  It would provide great support for them as they formulate their ideas.

Book Drive!

Good evening everyone,

Please find below a letter regarding our book drive which we will be conducting between now and mid-April.  This is a terrific initiative and it is our goal to use it as a means to display our school's desire to always make a difference in our world.

Dear Parents and Families,
Do you have gently used children’s books that your
family has outgrown? Would you like to see those
books in the hands of children who do not have
their own books?
The Children’s Book Bank is a charitable organization whose mission
is to provide gently used books and literacy support to the children of
low-income families in Canada. The first book bank location is at 350
Berkeley Street in Toronto. The Children’s Book Bank is aimed at
children up to Grade Six and operates like a children’s bookstore,
though the books are available to the children free of charge. In
addition to supplying free books to the children, The Children’s Book
Bank also offers informal literacy support such as readings and story
hours. The Children’s Book Bank sustains its inventory of books by accepting charitable
donations of gently used children’s books.
The students and staff at Rick Hansen Public School aim to make a difference
everyday! One way to make a difference is to support charities and make donations to help
others in need. The Kindergarten department at Rick Hansen Public School is therefore
running a book drive from now until April 19th, 2013 so that we can support The
Children’s Book Bank of Toronto.
If you are interested in participating in the book drive, you may send your gently used
children’s books to school. We will collect your generous donations and then deliver all of the
books to The Children’s Book Bank after April 19th, 2013. Please take care to ensure that
the donated books are gently used and are suitable for children up to grade six. No teen
novels or adult books please.
For further information on The Children’s Book Bank, you
may visit their website at www.childrensbookbank.com
Thank you for your interest and support!
