Thursday December 19, 2013

I would like to wish everyone and their families a very Merry Christmas.  I hope you all have a great break!

I am not assigning any homework for the break, but as we discussed in class, I would like everyone to please review the division and multiplication math lessons found on the blog and then practice their DMS Drop Loop and 2 by 2 digit multiplication.  We will be reviewing these concepts after the break.  I don't want anyone to forget what we have learned so far :)

Thanks everyone!  Once again, Merry Christmas!

Friday 1 November 2013

Friday November 1, 2013

Good evening ladies and gentlemen,

Please remember that Monday is our trip to the Science Centre.  Here are some reminders for the day:

1.  It would be a good idea to bring a couple of dollars to purchase a locker for the day so that you have a place to put bags and coats.  You can share with others.  I believe the cost is $1 or $2.

2.  You can either purchase a lunch in the cafeteria or bring a lunch.  If you bring a lunch, please bring one that is disposable so that you can throw everything out when you are done and therefore not need to go all the way back to the lockers.  The lockers are a long way from the cafeteria.

3.  We are planning on leaving around 9:00-9:15 so please make sure that you are here on time.  We are planning on arriving back at the school for regular dismissal at 3:40.

I am starting to write the blog in a way which is addressed to the students for I believe it serves as a way to develop a greater sense of responsibility for their own learning.  I would however appreciate parents taking the time to look over the homework as well.  The extra support that you provide is of  tremendous value to both your child, as well as myself.  Thanks so much!

Thursday 12 September 2013

Thursday September 12, 2013

Good evening,

As of late we have been working on Descriptive Text Articles and how to answer questions using the "Answer, Prove, Explain" (APE) format.  In the next couple of weeks, students will be learning more about these types of articles, and their first writing assignment will be to create their own.  The APE format can be used to answer any type of question which relates to a text, movie, song, etc..

It is extremely beneficial for students to discuss what they have been learning at home, and even practice using it wherever possible in contexts outside of the classroom.  This will allow them to become more comfortable using their knowledge, as well as identify areas where they may need extra instruction or need to ask questions.

Please find tonight's homework below.

Good evening everyone,

Please find the homework below, along with last night's message.  I will be including this message for the next few posts to ensure that all families have a chance to see it.  Thanks so much :)

Good evening,

As many are now aware, a letter was sent home with students tonight to serve as an official introduction of myself, as well as to make everyone aware of this blog which will serve as a means to keep the lines of communication open between school and home.  It is my hope that all students and parents will check this blog nightly so as to ensure that their child(ren) are prepared for class each day.  As well, this blog will serve as an alternative to agendas this year.  Students are still welcome to keep an agenda if they feel that it would be of benefit to them, but this blog will be the most accurate method of keeping track of homework.

Something I did not include on the "Getting to Know You" form was my email address.  My door is always open, and I understand that often the easiest method of communication is through email.  My email address is jonathan.carr@yrdsb.edu.on.ca.  For those who feel comfortable, please feel free to include your email address on the form mentioned above so that I too can seek to keep the lines of communication open.

Today a permission form was sent home for this year's Arts Program.  The form explains the program, which was well received last year.  It is not mandatory, but it is hoped that all students will participate.

Please find tonight's homework below.  As well, please feel free to take a look at last night's post for a better introduction to our blog :)

Homework:

-Please bring a novel to school for silent reading (due Monday)

-Bring newspapers or magazines to cut out pictures for a collage (due Friday)

-All forms sent home signed and returned (due Monday)

-Health - Exit Card (due Wednesday)

-Arts program permission form.

Have a terrific night.

Welcome to another school year at Rick Hansen P.S.!  It was so nice to meet so many parents this morning at the school.  For those I have yet to meet, I look forward to hopefully meeting you all soon.

This blog will be a wonderful tool for keeping parents up to date with that which students have been working on in the classroom.  The homework will be posted each night so that students and parents can ensure that they complete all work and come to school the next day prepared for class.  A note will be coming home shortly which will serve to better introduce myself and afford parents the opportunity to share any information they feel would be helpful in ensuring a great learning experience in our class this year.

Today a large number of forms were sent home, most of which are found in a "Student Start-Up Package".  Please take the time over the next couple of days to go over these forms with your child, and we ask that you please have them in at your earliest convenience.  Thanks so much! :)

Good evening,

There will no longer be any homework assigned.  We are currently completing assignments in class that we have been working on over the past week, so it is important that students are present to ensure that these assignments can be completed.  Students are asked to please ensure that their lockers are completely cleaned out by tomorrow afternoon.  For the last two days of school (Wednesday and Thursday), students are asked to ensure that they have their book bags with them as well as a pencil.  They are asked to have a pencil for assignments, and a book bag in case there is anything that they need to carry home with them.

We are looking forward to an exciting day tomorrow as we will have our Pride Assembly, as well as the Rick Hansen PS Talent Show.  Our school is full of many talented young men and women, and we are excited to see them shine tomorrow.

Thank you kindly.  I hope everyone has a great night.

Good evening,

As some may have noticed, there has not been as much homework going home for the past week.  This is due to the fact that much of what we are doing right now involves group work, and so students need to complete the assignments in class with their groups.  The tasks we have been working on in Literacy (Public Service Announcements), Science (Travel Back in Time Assignment), and Social Studies (Government Structure Experiential Exercise) are summative tasks for things we have been working on the past few weeks.  These tasks serve as a means for students to display their learning in a enjoyable, but authentic and meaningful, way.

Good evening,

Today our students had the opportunity to enjoy some golf instruction courtesy of the CN Future Links Golf Program.  The students really seemed to enjoy the game.  It looks like we have some budding golfers in our midst.  If any parents are interested in learning how to get their son or daughter more involved in the game of golf, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Good evening everyone,

Today the students did a tremendous job with their debate presentations.  We have one more group to present.  The students had a lot of fun, and it was exciting for me to watch their enthusiasm as they used their higher order thinking skills to generate ideas and develop meaningful arguments.

Due to the fact that we were working on the debates for much of today, I have not assigned any homework for this weekend.  The only thing that I would like to see come back on Monday is their signed Friday Folders.  Please take some time to look through their folders, as they will give you a greater idea of your child's performance in the classroom.  One of the purposes of the Friday Folders is for parents to be able to stay informed of their child's progress.

Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow is a P.A. Day.

Have a great weekend!

Good evening,

Today the grade 6 students concluded their EQAO testing.  They should all be very proud of themselves as I could tell that they were working hard and putting for their best effort.  I am a big believer in the fact that when you work your hardest and do your best, then you have achieved personal success, regardless of the result.

Hello everyone,

Yesterday was a terrific day of athletic competition.  I'm very proud of the effort that all the students demonstrated.  Especially since it was such a hot day.  A big thanks goes out to Mr. D. and Mrs. Lummiss for all their hard work in preparing for the day.

Next week our grade 6 students will be taking the EQAO test.  Please refer to the note sent home this week regarding the administration of the test.  Students have been working hard to prepare for the assessment, and as part of this we have discussed the importance of not stressing or worrying about the assessment.  Students are simply expected to put forth their best effort, but not worry nor stress about the results.  Such worry and stress can be detrimental to test scores, as well as overall health.

Please find this weekend's homework below:

I am not assigning any new homework for this evening.  Students are encouraged to read, as well as make sure that they have completed all homework from the past 2-3 days.  The grade 5's have their Federal Government questions due Tuesday, and the grade 6's are encouraged to continue working through their EQAO booklets as practice for the test next week.  As they practice it is important that they continue to practice using the "APE" (Answer, Prove, Explain) strategy that we have worked on in class.

I hope everyone has a terrific weekend!
