Thursday December 20, 2012

Good evening everyone,

Today the students performed in the school Holiday Concert.  For those parents who were able to make it, I am sure we all can agree that we each had a big smile on our faces as we watched the students perform so well.  I always love watching the students display their talents.

Tomorrow we will be having a pancake breakfast with Mr. Martyn's class.  Students have been informed that if they would like to they can bring an additional snack for the class as long as there is enough for everyone to share as well as remaining nut free.  (WE DO HAVE STUDENTS WITH NUT ALLERGIES IN THE CLASSROOM).

This will be my last post before the Christmas break.  There is no homework over the break.

To all those families who celebrate Christmas, I wish you a Merry Christmas, and to those who spend the holidays in other ways, I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday.

Goodevening everyone,

I would like to respectfully request that parents take the time to discuss with students the discussion that we had today as a class regarding the expectations on them as students.  We have had some issues with behavior of the class and unfortunately it has been noticed by multiple teachers in the school.  Today we discussed how we are a great group of students and how we do not want to have a reputation which is not an accurate reflection of the terrific young men and women that they truly are.  Thank you to everyone for your support in this.  Our students truly are great, we are just finding that some fine tuning regarding classroom behavio ur has become necessary.

Here is tonight's homework.....

Grade 5 & 6

Math - multiplication table practice
-math page questions 5 and 6

Literacy - Read 30 minutes, Reader's Notebook
-Research person/organization
-Libarary books due back

Have a great night!

Monday December 10, 2012

Goodevening everyone,

Today we had a really great discussion as a class regarding treating other students with kindness, and being "defenders" of students who are treated poorly.  Statistics say that when 3 or more students stand up to bullying that the bullying often stops within 4 seconds.  A couple weeks ago was Bullying Awareness Week and so discussions and initiatives such as these are ones which we are putting in place in the classroom to stand up against bullying behaviour and fulfill the pledge that we took as a class, and school, to ensure that bullying does not plague Rick Hansen PS.  These initiatives are also a means of promoting positive behaviour and general kindness to others, which in turn creates a classroom atmosphere which is more welcoming and conducive to learning.  I would like to encourage all parents to discuss these initiatives with their students as we collectively promote kind behaviour towards all people both at, and away from, school.
Here is the homework for this evening.

Hello parents,

I am really looking forward to meeting with all of you this coming week.  Just a friendly reminder for those who have not yet submitted their time request forms to please do so, as the office is working very hard to try and fit in all parents at a time that works best for them.

Students are currently working on data management in math.  We have been learning how to create various types of graphs, as well as how to interpret information from them.

In Literacy, we are continuing to work on our descriptive text articles, applying the strategies used to make a creative article so that the one we compose is exciting to read.  We have also begun to examine how visuals are used in various texts in order to enhance reader understanding.  We have examined how pictures can be used to better explain that which is in a text, identifying times where visuals are the most effective means of conveying information, and how captions are used to better enhance the effectiveness of a visual.

The grade 6's have been working on their science reports on a topic to do with space.  They have been encouraged this weekend to conduct more research in order to find a lot more detailed information pertaining to their research questions.  A trend that I have been noticing is that many students only provide shallow answers to questions given them, and do not explain in depth.  This is a skill that we will be working on as a class this year - providing all the meaningful information that you can find/provide when answering questions/researching topics.  The more depth to an answer, the more thorough the answer, and therefore the more effective the answer will be.

Once again, I look forward to meeting you all this coming week!

Thursday 8 November 2012

November 8, 2012

Today we worked on our "Descriptive Text Articles".  Students are writing articles about an animal of their choice which they have researched.  The purpose of this assignment was for them to choose an animal to research, divide their research into subtopics and then find meaningful, in-depth information on those subtopics.  We have also been working on using language in our writing which is descriptive and allows the reader to easily visualize what is being written about.  The students are currently working on typing out the text of their articles, and the next step will be to organize the text in a way which produces an article that is just as interesting to look at as it is to read.

When assisting students in their writing, it is important to encourage them to proofread their work in a meaningful way.  It can be very easy for teachers and parents to simply make all of the corrections in students' writing, but it is of greatest benefit to students when we point out errors and lead them to discover the correction themselves.  It should be noted however, that if a student is becoming frustrated, then it may be appropriate to provide the correct response.  The most common error I see in students is poor grammar (their writing sounds incorrect).   A great way to help them with this is to have them read aloud what they have written so that they can hear the mistake themselves and make the correction on the spot.  I hope this can be of benefit as you support your children at home :)

I would also like to encourage students to bring a donation tomorrow for our veterans as we recognize Remembrance Day as a school.  Students will be provided with poppies, but donations are greatly appreciated.  There will be a Remembrance Day assembly at 10:20 tomorrow.  Any interested families are more than welcome to attend.

Have a great night!

Jonathan

Social Studies - Grade 5's have a sheet on Ancient Greek Agriculture due next Tuesday.  Grade 6's have chart to complete on First Nations Peoples due next Tuesday.

Picture forms are due tomorrow for anyone else who would like to order pictures.

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to our class blog!  It is my hopes that this will be a helpful resource for parents to provide student support at home pertaining to all that we are learning in the classroom.  Students work hard while they are here at school, but it is important for parents to be aware of what they are learning so that they can provide the neccessary help at home to ensure that students are as successful as they can be.

I would like to encourage all parents to check the blog whenever you get a chance in your busy schedules.  As I will not necessarily make posts every day, it will be a tool that I will use to make sure that parents are aware of important dates and events going on in our classroom.  I will also use it as a means of providing insight in regards to specific ways that you can support your student at home.

I am extremely excited to be at Rick Hansen, and am especially thankful for the opportunity to teach your children.  The past month has allowed me to get to know each and every one of them better, and I must say that I am truly blessed to be able to have such a wonderful group of students this year.

I look forward to meeting all of you parents as well, and getting to know you, as we together work toward the common goal of supporting your children as they develop into the types of learners that will see them achieve success in the classroom this year, as well as those to come.

It is important to know that my door is always open.  If you ever have any questions or concerns please let me know.  I can be reached through email at jonathan.carr@yrdsb.edu.on.ca or you can call the school at 905-841-6225, and my extension is 316.

Respectfully,

Jonathan Carr
