Friday December 18, 2015

Good evening everyone!

You all performed very nicely as a band today at the assembly.  I really enjoyed seeing everyone's hard work pay off.  We're fortunate to have such an amazing music educator in Mrs. Legros, and talented students to perform!

There is no homework for the break.

I just wanted to let everyone know how incredibly proud I am of all of you.  I hope you all have a very nice break, for you have been working hard and you deserve it.  I often realize how fortunate I am to be able to come to work every day and teach a group of students that I enjoy so much.  Each and every one of you are terrific young people, with so many talents, and the potential to do great things.  I'm particularly proud of the empathy I so often see in you all as a group.  I can tell that you care about each other, and it speaks volumes to the character you have developed through the years.  I hope you never lose your ability to work hard, do your best, and show genuine care for those around you.  You're a terrific group, and I am so thankful that I get to teach so many of you for a second time :)

If you and your family celebrate Christmas, I wish you a very Merry Christmas.  If you celebrate another holiday, I wish you a very happy celebration.  And for any without a specific celebration, I wish you a wonderful, restful time with your family.

Happy New Year!

Mr. Carr

Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

Please see the note below regarding winter electives.

Important Date Change
Winter Electives

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Snow Valley Resort has recently notified us of an issue which will affect our Winter Electives.

The long range forecast is calling for warmer winter temperatures right into the new year.  Snow Valley Resort is concerned that they will not have enough snow for their tubing hills and have asked us to change one of our dates.

The outing which was originally planned for Friday, January 8th (including the activity your child selected for this date) will now take place on Monday, January, 25th.  Our January 14th outing is not affected.

If this date change affects your child's ability to participate (e.g., you know ahead of time that your child will not be in school on Monday, January 25th), please let your child’s homeroom teacher know.  Similarly, if your child was not able to participate on January 8th, but now can on account of this date change, please let us know as we would be happy to add your child to the trip.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

The Junior/Intermediate Staff at Rick Hansen Public School

Friday December 11, 2015

Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

Today was the due date for winter electives forms.  If you will not be participating, please have your parents either write me a note or send me an email to let me know.  We need to know numbers for who will be staying behind so that we can plan activities for students here at the school.  At the same time, if you decide to participate in Snow Valley then you can always try to get the form in late.  The sooner the better.

Please see my note below in the homework regarding the potluck.

Please find your homework below....

-Progress Report envelopes signed and returned please.  We are trying to save paper by reusing the envelopes for the entire year.

Potluck- Before I make a decision on the potluck, I would like everyone to discuss with their parents whether this is something they would like to do.  I am hesitant doing it because I know that families have a lot going on this time of year and I don't want to put another item on their to do lists.  Please come on Monday prepared to take a silent vote telling me whether this is something that your parents are okay with.  I would also like you to come with an item that they would like to contribute if they are in fact okay with it.  If we do have a potluck it will be on Thursday.  (Due Monday)

Health - Please have 3 very meaningful points to share with the class to show what you have learned for your question on healthy eating.  (Due Thursday)

History - Practice becoming an expert on your story.  Remember the discussion we had in class and how I modeled for you how to do this. (due Thursday)

French - Please get parents to sign form saying they saw the work sent home.  (Due)

Science - Make sure you are keeping up with the assignments on Mrs. Foster's outline sheet.

Food Drive - We are having a Food Drive to support those in our community who could use support.  If you would like to contribute, it would be greatly appreciated.  A reminder for our class that if you get 180 items, I will allow you to shave my head (after Christmas...I need to take family photos at Christmas :)  )

Secret Santa - Back by popular demand!  Gift limit is $5.  Please have your gifts here for Thursday December 17th.

-Please make sure you always have an age appropriate book to enjoy reading at school.

Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

I hope you all had a terrific weekend.

Please make sure that you remember what we discussed today in class.  You have a busy week ahead of you.  It is very important that you plan your time well so that you get all the studying in that you require to do your best for tests and assignments.  You can all do well, but you need to plan ahead!  That means you should start preparing tonight!

A little note for you and your parents,.....

I know that parents love being able to have a "window" into the classroom whenever possible, and it is extremely beneficial for this to happen.  For this reason, I have created a Twitter account which will allow you to get a glimpse into what we are doing in the classroom.  Today I began posting pictures of some of our work (no student faces are being shown).  I would like to encourage parents and students to regularly take a look at the posts so that you can have an improved idea of all the learning we are engaged in.  You can follow the link below to find the page.  I don't believe you need to have a Twitter account in order to view our posts and links.  I'm looking forward to sharing with you throughout the year.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen,

Winter Elective forms went out.  This is a wonderful opportunity for some fun and exercise.  Mr. Macris does an amazing job of planning these events for us.  It is important to remember that they are completely optional.  We recognize that they are costly, and there is absolutely no problem if this is something that you and your family decide not to participate in.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen,

Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

Today was a great day!  I'm very proud of how hard everyone worked.  You did a great job of working together to achieve the goal of learning in an authentic and enjoyable way!  I'd love to encourage you to discuss with your parents what we learned today regarding the value of self-directed learning (taking responsibility for your learning).

And now a little note for you and your parents,.....

Friday September 18, 2015

Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

I loved seeing everyone have fun during the golf clinic this afternoon.  Golf is such a great game that anyone can enjoy.  I hope for additional opportunities down the road for us to enjoy learning more.

I am attaching a very important message for your parents below.....

Dear Parents,

As many of you know, the public elementary teachers in Ontario have been working without a contract since August of last year. Unfortunately, contract talks with the government have recently stalled. The work-to-rule protest which the union representing all public elementary teachers started last spring, continues - and today, teachers received additional instructions regarding this protest.

I regret to inform you that as of Monday, I will no longer be allowed to update our classroom website. Instead, I will have my students record their homework/agenda items on paper.

I believe that our classroom website is so beneficial for my students.  It is my sincere hope that the government and the union resume contract talks as soon as possible, and that an agreement is reached so that we can return to business as usual.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kindest Regards,

J. Carr
