Friday May 31, 2013

Hello everyone,

Yesterday was a terrific day of athletic competition.  I'm very proud of the effort that all the students demonstrated.  Especially since it was such a hot day.  A big thanks goes out to Mr. D. and Mrs. Lummiss for all their hard work in preparing for the day.

Next week our grade 6 students will be taking the EQAO test.  Please refer to the note sent home this week regarding the administration of the test.  Students have been working hard to prepare for the assessment, and as part of this we have discussed the importance of not stressing or worrying about the assessment.  Students are simply expected to put forth their best effort, but not worry nor stress about the results.  Such worry and stress can be detrimental to test scores, as well as overall health.

Please find this weekend's homework below:

I am not assigning any new homework for this evening.  Students are encouraged to read, as well as make sure that they have completed all homework from the past 2-3 days.  The grade 5's have their Federal Government questions due Tuesday, and the grade 6's are encouraged to continue working through their EQAO booklets as practice for the test next week.  As they practice it is important that they continue to practice using the "APE" (Answer, Prove, Explain) strategy that we have worked on in class.

I hope everyone has a terrific weekend!

This is a friendly reminder that tomorrow is Track and Field Day.  Students are expected to participate as part of the Physical Education curriculum.  As the note sent home last night stated, we are no longer traveling to G.W. Williams High School.  We will be staying at Rick Hansen PS for the day.  Please ensure that students have plenty of water, healthy food and snacks, sunscreen, hats, etc..  We are hearing that it is supposed to be hot tomorrow.

Good evening everyone,

On Monday the students have the good copy of their debate essays due.  For those students who do not have a printer, I would appreciate if they could please email me their reports so that I can print them here at the school.  This saves time on Monday rather than having students get onto computers and print them themselves.  Thank you kindly.

As well, I am still waiting on quite a few Track and Field Forms.  Students are asked to please have them in by Tuesday at the latest.

Good evening,

I just wanted to take the opportunity to let everyone know that on Thursday the students will be completing a math test.  We had a review period today, and students have been assigned to check over the answers to the review questions, as well as pages that they have been assigned for homework in this 3D geometry unit.  It is important for students to come with any questions about concepts, or specific questions, that they are having difficulty with, so that we can address them on Tuesday.  Thank you so much.

Today the students were blessed with a tremendous opportunity to engage in activities relating to Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Mr. Michael Padfield, a local lawyer, was good enough to come in and run a mock trial with our students.  He even took the time yesterday to come in and teach us some background info that we needed for the trial.  We would like to thank Mr. Padfield for generously donating his time and providing a very unique and memorable experience for our students.

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I am sure many of you are as excited as I am to see the weather as nice as it is. :)

Today in math class we had Mr. Gardner as our special guest, and we had a great time discussing the answer to a "challenge problem" we worked on last week.  Mr. Gardner, as well as myself, were very impressed with the excitement displayed by students as they worked together to try and solve this problem.  What made this problem so exciting was that it was a realistic problem that we could see in our everyday world.  I would love to encourage parents to have similar discussions with their students, whether it be about math, a book they have read, something they have seen on television, etc..  Anytime students are asked to discuss real-life issues, and come up with possible solutions, it is a terrific way to work on their critical thinking skills.
