November 8, 2012

Today we worked on our "Descriptive Text Articles".  Students are writing articles about an animal of their choice which they have researched.  The purpose of this assignment was for them to choose an animal to research, divide their research into subtopics and then find meaningful, in-depth information on those subtopics.  We have also been working on using language in our writing which is descriptive and allows the reader to easily visualize what is being written about.  The students are currently working on typing out the text of their articles, and the next step will be to organize the text in a way which produces an article that is just as interesting to look at as it is to read.

When assisting students in their writing, it is important to encourage them to proofread their work in a meaningful way.  It can be very easy for teachers and parents to simply make all of the corrections in students' writing, but it is of greatest benefit to students when we point out errors and lead them to discover the correction themselves.  It should be noted however, that if a student is becoming frustrated, then it may be appropriate to provide the correct response.  The most common error I see in students is poor grammar (their writing sounds incorrect).   A great way to help them with this is to have them read aloud what they have written so that they can hear the mistake themselves and make the correction on the spot.  I hope this can be of benefit as you support your children at home :)

I would also like to encourage students to bring a donation tomorrow for our veterans as we recognize Remembrance Day as a school.  Students will be provided with poppies, but donations are greatly appreciated.  There will be a Remembrance Day assembly at 10:20 tomorrow.  Any interested families are more than welcome to attend.

Have a great night!

Jonathan
