Thursday January 23, 2020

Good evening everyone!

As many of our students will be celebrating Chinese New Year, we will have a celebration together tomorrow.  As we discussed in class, if you would like to bring in treats that represent your families celebration, you are welcome to do so, but please MAKE SURE IT IS NUT FREE.  I am unable to allow any food to be distributed if it is not labelled nut free.  I know this likely eliminates most options.  I am sorry about this, but it is important for me to follow the rules to keep all students safe.

Students are encouraged to wear red, orange or gold clothing if they have it.

We will plan to decorate the room tomorrow for Chinese New Year, do some origami, and possibly watch some of a movie.  I'm looking forward to it!

Please find your homework below.

Portfolios - Please have the following work signed and returned...
1. Math test
2. War of 1812 rubric (some have still not submitted their assignment)
3.  Political Cartoon rubric (some still have not submitted their assignment)

Literacy - First draft of essays - Introductory paragraph, first body paragraph & second body paragraph are all due tomorrow.  Please continue to use the following success criteria to help guide you.  (due tomorrow).

Checklist for each body paragraph

  1. Is each paragraph helpful to my audience?  (Teach them about stress/anxiety & the brain & inspire them to use this information in their lives?)  (Otherwise this will be boring)
  2. Do I have convincing, non-obvious arguments?
  3. Do I support ALL my arguments using info I learned in my research?

Math - For students who received a mark under 70% on their math test, please see me with your corrections by tomorrow.  (Due tomorrow)

Learning Skills - Each day, please complete your Daily Reflection page.  You are reflecting on the following prompt... "Today, I did what I ought to do when I ought to do it, so that one day I can do what I want to do when I want to do it."  (Every day)

Passion Projects - I would like to encourage everyone to go to the Aurora Public Library and find books on their Passion Project topic.  Please try to have them available for you to read at school after the Winter Break. (Due)

Social Studies - Please complete the following 2 question pages for homework....
1. Examining English, French & British Government Perspectives in 1837
2. The Durham Report & Act of Union
Both of these are on Google Classroom if you need another copy of the question pages.
I recommend not leaving this work to the last minute, but rather do a little bit at a time over the course of the week.  (Due Monday)

Math - Please complete 2 more rounds of your fitness tracking exercises.  It doesn't matter which days you do, but you should have 2 more rounds recorded by Friday.  We need to have these for activities in class.  In general, you need to be doing 2 rounds of fitness tests at home every week.  Thank you :) (Due Friday)

Art - The following  are the instructions for our current Art assignment.  You will have one more class to work on this assignment before it is due...

Task

Health- Please complete the task below.  You will have one more period on Monday to work on this, and then it will be due on Tuesday.
For those who I spoke with, the question I have asked you to answer the question, "How can stress be a good thing".   If I have not spoken to you about this, then you are doing the task explained below.  (Due Tuesday)

  1. We have done extensive study of the brain, stress & anxiety.  Your task is to now self-assess how well you deal with stress.  You can do this in any way you would like, but some options may be…
    1. An artistic picture
    2. A whiteboard presentation
    3. A concept web
    4. A journal entry
    5. Point form notes
    6. Any other method you find will help you reflect.

  1. Once you have reflected, create some point form notes which represent what you believe are meaningful next steps to help you improve at dealing with stress.

Health - We have been learning about the brain.

Below are some links to texts which promote mindsets that we are seeking to develop in our  class this year in order to enhance our learning experiences.  Each text is a teacher writing to their student in an effort to provide encouragement.  I hope you enjoy them.  Please let me know what you think :)

I encourage you to share and discuss these with your parents.  In order to view them, I believe you will need to be logged into your Google Apps account.

1.  Adding to your bank account
2.  To the student who just got an answer wrong in class
3.  To accomplish, you must first become
4.  School improves your passions
5.  The way school improves your passions
6.  Are you committed to your success?  Prove it, and you'll be glad you did!
7.  Why growth is fun!

Have a great evening,

Mr. Carr
