Friday February 12, 2016

Good evening ladies & gentlemen,

Please remember that Monday is Family Day, and as such there is no school.  Have a great long weekend!

The following is to give your parents an update on that which we have been studying as of late....

In literacy we are continuing our social justice unit through novel studies.  The students have been reading texts that relate to various issues pertaining to the injustices in our world.  The texts are very thought provoking and have allowed each student to meaningfully reflect on some of the injustices that are seen around our world.

Students are responsible for various jobs that they must complete for each section of the text.  It is important that they manage their time, and come prepared to participate in literature circle discussions.

In Math, we have been continuing our studies of 2D geometry.  In the next week we will complete our work with tessellations, and then move toward a final task for the unit.  Through this task, students will be required to demonstrate their learning in an authentic way.

We have had some very meaningful discussions in Health class over the last few weeks.  It is my hope that students have been having discussions with their parents about that which they have been learning.  This week they have been assigned to write a letter to their future selves.  In this letter they are to provide advice for themselves when they come across issues pertaining to internet safety.

In History, we are continuing our study of the First Nations people.  We will be examining historical events from the 1800's and analyzing how they have affected today's First Nations communities.

    Math Lessons

    1. Translations & Reflections - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf8dbFgm4h8
    2. Creating Similar Shapes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YzyROtYyEg (Remember, the process explained in this video for creating a similar shape is the same regardless of what shape it is).
    3. Creating Similar Shapes Using Algebra - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUt8KBMkOwc
    4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mt28LXW0cZo (Rotating & Translating Shapes in Patterns)

Literacy - Your articles were due today.  If you have not submitted on Google Classroom, please make sure that you do immediately!  Thank you.

Health - Complete your letters to yourself...assignment can be found on Google Classroom (due Tuesday)

Literacy - Make sure you are following the timelines for your Social Justice readings and assignments. We need to do a much better job of keeping on top of this. It is important that you complete everything on your assignment checklists. It is also imperative that you have your books clearly labelled when you hand them in so that we can find everything we need to mark (Figurative language, discussion notes, job notes, your job). Your marks will suffer if you do not follow these requirements.

Literacy - Please come to school on Tuesday with a question that you would like to investigate. Please remember the example I gave in class with all the books I read. Your question should take the following into account (due Tuesday):
    1. It must be a specific question.
    2. It must be a topic that you are passionate about. Something that you are incredibly interested in and love.
    3. Should be something that you would find extremely fun to learn about.
    4. Something that you can research in great depth to learn lots, and lots, and lots about :)

French - IR Verbs (due Tuesday)

*If you got an anti-spam sheet to return to the office, please make sure you do by Tuesday. This is the 4th time it has gone home, and the office needs a response please.

History - Please complete the following (due Tuesday)

    1.  Describe the major struggle the First Nations people face in trying to keep their traditional ways of life, but having to battle against outside influences (think about what you saw in the video of the Mohawk Tribe land).

    2.  Read page 216 & 217 in the textbook.  What significant events affected the First Nations tribes?  How were they affected?  (Don't be afraid to read earlier sections in the textbook to help you understand events that are confusing to you).

Science - Please make sure that you keep up to date with Mrs. Foster's assignment sheet.

    Have a great evening!
